Introduction

The Modern Parent’s guide to navigating the challenges of kids, Apps and gaming.

BY DR. BILL BERCAW

My 7th grader and I were driving along a California freeway when she asked if she could get a new app. Nothing new here. Her friends all had it and were having fun with it, so she understandably wanted in. I asked her to explain it to me so she told me how the app posed questions about who had the best this or best that – like best eyes or best smile- “and if you answer correctly you get points.” I said, “Oh, so you’re rating celebrities?” She replied, “No, DAD, you’re rating your FRIENDS.” So finding myself solidly in DAD mode I asked, “Don’t people’s feelings get hurt with something like that?” At which point, my daughter set me straight: “Of course not. Everybody knows it’s just for fun.” Well, I didn’t give her a yes or no, but did promise to take a look at it when we had time and to discuss it with mom when she has a chance to see it also.

When it comes to technology, our kids are the natives and we are the visitors. With apps and gaming, we parents often feel at least a couple of steps behind our kids. Just when we think we are current with their new favorites, they are onto something new. Waaayyy onto something new. In this section, you will find a wealth of information that will help you feel more confident in your understanding of these areas and in your approach with your kids.
